* Mrkunlex One constant thing in life is change. As
humans we are exposed to several changes in every aspect of life. A perfect example of
change is 'aging'. Aging is one one factor in life that is highly considered. It is said that
we should make hay while the sun shines.
This means we should aim at everything we
can and work towards it while we are young
and healthy before age catches-up with us.
In Nigeria there are various retirement ages
for every profession depending on your
status or rank in that profession. These
retirement ages are followed as stated in the
Nigerian constitution. Nobody is above the
constitution meaning that the constitution
should be obeyed and respected by every
sane Nigerian.
In this post, I'll list out the various retirement
ages as stated by the Nigerian constitution.
RETIREMENT AGES FOR EVERY PROFESSION
IN NIGERIA
1. ACADEMIC AND NON-ACADEMIC STAFFS
OF HIGHER INSTITUTIONS
In Nigeria, the retirement age for academic
and non-academic staffs is 65 years or 35
years of public service.
2.
PROFESSORS
The retirement age for professors is 70 years.
This age was approved by the senate of
Nigeria on 19 January 2012. This age also
includes senior lecturers at various
institutions.
3.
JUDGES
The retirement age for Judges especially
Supreme court and lower court Judges in
Nigeria is 70 years. This age is irrespective of
the number of years in public service.
4.
JUDICIAL STAFFS
In Nigeria, the retirement age for Judicial
staffs below the rank of Judges is 65 years or
after 35 years of public service.
5.
MEDICAL CONSULTANTS IN FEDERAL
MEDICAL CENTRES
The retirement age for Medical consultants in
Federal Medical Centres in Nigeria is 60 years
or 35 years of service.
6.
NIGERIAN MILITARY OFFICERS
The retirement age for Military Officers in
Nigeria is 62 years. Initially it was 52 but
amendments in Harmonised Terms and
Condition of Service (HTACOS) increased it to
that number.
7.
MEDICAL CONSULTANTS IN UNIVERSITY
TEACHING HOSPITALS
The retirement age for Medical consultants in
Nigeria University Teaching Hospitals is 60
years or 35 years of public service.
8.
PILOTS
The retirement age for Pilots in Nigeria is 62
years. This is the current statutory age for
Pilots in the Nigerian civil service.
9.
AVIATION WORKERS
The retirement age for aviation workers that
are not Pilots in Nigeria is 60 years.
10.
SECONDARY AND PRIMARY SCHOOL
TEACHERS
The retirement age for secondary and
primary school teachers is 60 years. Though
there have been protests by the NUT to raise
the age to 65 years, but no bill has been
passed for it.
11.
NNPC WORKERS
NNPC workers were also given a retirement
age of 60 years or 35 years of service. This is
according to Statutory Corporations
Pensionable Officers (retiring age limit) act.
Section one (1), sub-section one of the Act
states that “The retiring age limit for all
pensionable officers of statutory corporations
shall be sixty years.”
12.
NIGERIAN FIRE SERVICE
In the Nigerian Fire Service the retirement
age is 45 years or 25 years of service.
13.
NSCDC
The NSCDC do not have any stated
retirement age in the Nigerian constitution.
This also applies to other Paramilitary
organizations in Nigeria, their officers do not
have a stipulated age for retirement.
14.
NIGERIAN POLICE FORCE
The retirement for the Nigerian Police Force
officers is 60 years or 35 years if completed
by that age.
The officer is expected to forward his
retirement letter to the Police Service
Commission (PSC) months before the
retirement date.
The Police Service Commission will approve
the letter and the officer will be taught/
lectured on how to live a successful
retirement life.
This is organized by Police Service
Commission. However, there are situations in
which a police officer may exceed his
retirement age. This is either as a result of his
outstanding performance and the commission
still need his service (extend his/her service)
or delay in the approval of his retirement
letter.
15.
NIGERIAN PRISON SERVICE
There is no stipulated retirement age for
officers in the Nigerian Prison Service just like
other Paramilitary agencies.
16.
PRIVATE WORKERS
The retirement ages in Private companies or
industries are not uniform. There is apparently
no stipulated retirement age for these
workers. You can be sacked from work
anytime as your boss may wish. Though
some Private organizations still follow the
retirement age stated by the Federal
government or constitution.
It would be worthy to note that the
retirement term given to every public worker
is 35 years of service.
